Never climb a steep roof without proper fall protection. Use ladders on level ground, secured at top and bottom. For tall structures, prefer a laser rangefinder from the ground.
The method depends on what you're trying to find. To check our high-roof bracket compatibility, you usually only need roof height — gutter to roof top.
Many van manufacturers (Toyota HiAce, Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and others) list "height to gutter" and "height to roof" in their factory spec sheets — but aftermarket tyres or suspension lifts change that, so measuring manually is the only way to get true clearance.

The distance from the ground to the highest point. Useful for checking clearance for an awning or other accessories.

The angle of the roof: measure rise (vertical height from base to peak) and run (horizontal distance to halfway under the roof). Pitch = rise ÷ run.

Measure length and width directly with a tape or laser.
